Why This Comparison Matters Right Now
Self-hosted AI agents went from a curiosity to a legitimate production pattern in the last nine months. The reason is straightforward: the cost of running an agent that routes between your messaging apps, your code, and an LLM has collapsed — a capable VPS is under $10/month, Claude and GPT API calls are cheaper than they were a year ago, and the open-source scaffolding is finally good enough to stop writing your own.
The two projects most people land on are OpenClaw and NanoClaw. They target the same rough problem — "give me a self-hosted AI agent wired into my chat apps" — but the two codebases represent almost opposite philosophies. OpenClaw is a batteries-included gateway with a long list of bundled channels and a web dashboard. NanoClaw is a minimalist container-per-agent framework that fits in a few source files and treats every agent as untrusted code.
We've been running both on a Hostinger VPS for the last two months. The OpenClaw deployment guide we published works for either one, since both target a similar class of VPS. This comparison is about which one earns the install.
Both Clear the Baseline — And Then Diverge
Before the differences, the agreement: both projects are MIT licensed, both are genuinely open source (not "open core"), both work end-to-end without a commercial license, and both are actively maintained. If you're using either one in a home lab or small-team context, you're not going to lose access because a startup pivoted.
From there, they diverge sharply.
OpenClaw's philosophy: the gateway is the product. One process, one config file (~/.openclaw/openclaw.json), one dashboard at http://127.0.0.1:18789/, and a plugin for every channel you might plausibly want — Discord, WhatsApp, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Telegram, iMessage, Matrix, Zalo, Nostr, Twitch, Google Chat, and WebChat all ship in the box. Multi-agent routing is handled by per-sender sessions inside the single gateway process.
NanoClaw's philosophy: the agent is the unit. Each agent group runs inside its own Docker container with a dedicated filesystem, memory, and CLAUDE.md. Credentials never enter those containers — all outbound API calls proxy through OneCLI's Agent Vault, which injects keys at request time. The host router moves messages via two separate SQLite files (inbound.db and outbound.db) so there's no IPC and no contention.
Both approaches are defensible. Which one you want depends almost entirely on how you answer one question: is the biggest risk in your setup the agent, or everything around the agent? If it's the agent, NanoClaw is the right architecture. If it's your own time, OpenClaw is.
Install Experience
OpenClaw wins this round decisively.
OpenClaw install is npm install -g openclaw@latest followed by openclaw --install-daemon if you want it running as a service. Node 22.14 LTS or Node 24, an API key, and you're through the onboarding dashboard in roughly the time it takes to make coffee. The documented install time of "about 5 minutes" matches our experience.
NanoClaw install is a single command too — bash nanoclaw.sh — but that script then installs pnpm, pulls Docker images, builds containers, registers credentials into OneCLI, and pairs initial channels. Realistically you're ten to fifteen minutes in before you're sending messages, and you need Docker Desktop or Docker Engine already running. If you don't have Docker on the box, budget another thirty minutes.

Channel Support
This is the single biggest practical gap between the two projects today.
OpenClaw bundles thirteen channels with first-party plugins: Discord, Google Chat, iMessage, Matrix, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Slack, Telegram, WhatsApp, Zalo, Nostr, Twitch, and WebChat. Switching them on is a dashboard toggle plus credentials. The skills marketplace extends this further — community plugins for anything from Reddit DMs to custom webhooks land in the same interface.
NanoClaw supports a smaller core — WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Teams, iMessage, Matrix, GitHub integrations, and email — but each channel is an install-on-demand module rather than bundled. In practice this means fewer moving parts by default, at the cost of more work if you want something exotic. GitHub as a channel is interesting — having an agent that replies to issues and PRs via the same mechanism as chat messages is a pattern OpenClaw handles only through webhook plugins.
For a single user wiring up their existing chat apps, OpenClaw's bundle covers more of what you'd actually want. For an automation-heavy workflow that lives in GitHub and email, NanoClaw's curated set is arguably more useful.
Security Model: Where NanoClaw Earns Its Place
This is the round where the architectural differences matter most.
OpenClaw's security model is configuration-first. The ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json file holds allowlists of permitted senders, group mention rules, per-channel tokens, and session policies. Per-sender sessions prevent cross-contamination between users hitting the same gateway. That's a reasonable model for a trusted home-lab context, but it's a process-level boundary. If an agent is compromised — through a prompt-injection attack, a malicious skills-marketplace plugin, or a vulnerability in a channel adapter — the blast radius is the entire gateway, including every token in that JSON file.
NanoClaw's security model is OS-level. Every agent runs in its own Docker container with explicit filesystem mounts. Credentials never enter those containers; the OneCLI vault holds them on the host and injects them only into outbound requests. A compromised agent can only see its own mounted files, its own inbound queue, and the outbound SQLite it writes to. The router reads that outbound file and delivers messages — but the agent itself never touched a real API key.
This is the single most important difference between the two projects. For anyone running an agent with access to production secrets, customer data, or the ability to execute code, the NanoClaw model is genuinely better. LLM Backend Flexibility
OpenClaw is model-agnostic by design. You bring an API key — Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq, a local Ollama endpoint, whatever — and the gateway speaks to it. There's no opinion about which provider you use, and switching is a config change.
NanoClaw is Claude-first. The primary integration is Anthropic's official Agent SDK, and the project's opinionated choice is to lean into Claude's tool-use and long-context strengths. You can add OpenRouter (/add-opencode) or local Ollama (/add-ollama-provider), but those are second-class citizens compared to the native Claude path.
If you're all-in on Claude — and given that Claude Opus 4.7 is currently the strongest model for agentic work, many people reasonably are — NanoClaw's opinionation is a feature. If you want the freedom to flip between Claude, GPT, and a local Qwen model on a weekly basis, OpenClaw is the better platform. Dashboard and Day-Two Operations
OpenClaw ships a Web Control UI on port 18789 — route status, session logs, per-channel health, and a plugin browser. Mobile node pairing means you can install the OpenClaw mobile app on iOS or Android and check on your gateway from outside the LAN. For a self-hoster who'd rather spend time using the agent than maintaining it, that's genuinely valuable.
NanoClaw has no dashboard. Day-two operations are docker ps, tail -f on the two SQLite-adjacent log files, and reading CLAUDE.md to understand what each agent thinks it's doing. That's fine for a developer who lives in a terminal. It's a meaningful friction for anyone who doesn't.
Is OpenClaw Worth Using Over NanoClaw If Security Is My Priority?
If security is genuinely your top priority, no — NanoClaw's container-per-agent architecture and external credential vault are a categorically stronger baseline than OpenClaw's single-process model with allowlist configuration. OpenClaw can be hardened with careful allowlists, per-channel service accounts, and network segmentation, but it cannot retrofit OS-level isolation between agents without a ground-up redesign.
Real-World Scenarios
We ran both through four representative deployments on our test VPS. Here's what shook out.
Home-lab tinkerer with one gateway and three channels. OpenClaw. It's not close — the npm install, the dashboard, and the bundled channels remove roughly three hours of friction, and the attack surface is still bounded by a VPS you control.
Security-conscious self-hoster running agents with code-execution capability. NanoClaw. The blast-radius math alone makes this the right call. An agent that can run shell commands should be the only thing inside its container.
Small team (2–5 people) running different personas through the same gateway. OpenClaw. Per-sender session routing handles this elegantly, and the dashboard makes multi-user operations auditable without needing to SSH in.
Privacy absolutist running local models only. NanoClaw. Both support Ollama, but NanoClaw's architecture was designed with local-first in mind, and the vault model means even your telemetry stays on the host.
You'll notice a pattern: OpenClaw wins when operations are the constraint; NanoClaw wins when security is the constraint. Both are true in different contexts.
Cost of Ownership
Neither project costs money to use, but they have meaningfully different infrastructure footprints.
OpenClaw runs comfortably on a 2 vCPU / 4 GB VPS. Our best-VPS-for-OpenClaw guide covers the specs in detail, but the short version is that a mid-tier Hostinger VPS plan handles multi-channel routing without breaking a sweat.
NanoClaw needs more headroom because every agent is a container. Three agents running simultaneously plus the host router is closer to a 4 vCPU / 8 GB target, and if you're planning to run five or more personas you'll want to bump RAM again. Docker's overhead is real, even if it's not dramatic.
Community and Longevity
OpenClaw's community lives primarily on its own Discord and the skills marketplace forum. It's growing fast but is still earlier in its lifecycle. NanoClaw's 27.9k GitHub stars and 1,091 commits on main are a strong signal of durability — not because star counts matter in the abstract, but because a codebase with that much ambient attention is harder to break without someone noticing.
Both are likely to be around in two years. Neither has announced a commercial model that would pull them away from genuinely open source, and the MIT license means even if they did, you can fork.
The Verdict
OpenClaw is our pick for most self-hosters in 2026. The breadth of bundled channels, the web dashboard, mobile node pairing, and the genuinely five-minute install make it the right starting point for anyone whose primary question is "does this solve my problem?" rather than "is this provably safe?". If you're just getting started with self-hosted agents, start here — deploy it on a Hostinger VPS, give it a weekend, and you'll know whether the category fits you.
NanoClaw is our pick for the subset of self-hosters who are running agents that matter. Container-per-agent isolation and the OneCLI vault are features you cannot add to OpenClaw without a rewrite, and the audit-friendly codebase is a security property that compounds over time. If you're running agents with access to production systems, real money, or genuinely sensitive data, this is the architecture you want.
Either way, you're better off than you'd be hand-rolling your own scaffolding on top of a raw LLM API. These two projects represent the two sane paths for self-hosted AI agents in 2026, and both beat rolling your own.

NanoClaw is the smarter pick if your threat model treats the agent itself as untrusted — which, frankly, it should. Container-per-agent isolation and the OneCLI vault are not features you can retrofit onto a single-process gateway, and a codebase you can read end-to-end over a weekend is a security property in its own right. Pick NanoClaw if you're running agents with access to real secrets, production code, or customer data, and you'd rather have fewer channels with stronger guarantees than every channel with a larger blast radius.
